This paper answers specific questions about terrorism: Is it treasonous to suggest that American foreign policy has contributed to the rise of terrorism? Has our foreign policy contributed to the rise of radical Islam? Can we shift our policy in the Middle East? What would we gain and lose? Discussion Is it treasonous to question American foreign policy? Absolutely not! This question doesnt even need to be researched, because the freedom of speech is guaranteed to every citizen as part of the Constitution. If we have questions about the governments actions, particularly as they are being done in our name, we have not only the right but the duty to demand an explanation for those actions. In addition, it is not President Bush and Congress who will be fighting these wars and paying for them-that will fall to us. We therefore have the right to know whats being done, why, and if we feel it is wrong or mistaken, it is our duty as Americans to say so. Treason is a word that is tossed around much too frequently today; it has become an easy way for the Administration to stifle dissent. When citizens can no longer speak freely for fear of being called traitors or harassed or arrested, then the country is no longer a democracy, its a dictatorship.
