been overwhelmingly about the manufacturing sector (Capar and Kotabe, 2003). In other words, there is a real gap in the literature regarding the services sector, in general. Service companies
are identified as those who provide intangible items but that still requires interaction between the provider and the customer (Capar and Kotabe, 2003). The foundation of service companies is knowledge
(Capar and Kotabe, 2003). The service sector is vast and diverse and ranges from call-center type jobs to professional jobs, such as software engineers, accountants, communication services (Santomero, 2004).
The foundation of service companies is knowledge because service providers have knowledge the customer does not have (Capar and Kotabe, 2003). Services that fall under the umbrella of intellectual property
would also be included in this large sector but it is much larger and more multifaceted than simply intellectual property. Scientific research, architectural designs, health care, insurance, personnel training, education
- these are also services that have been globalized. Still, one will find more in the literature about intellectual property than about services, in general. Interestingly, the service sector is
the fastest growing sector worldwide. It is the vast diversity of this sector that may be the reasons for so much less attention paid to it in the literature.
The service sector has become so important domestically and globally, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin releasing a new quarterly report of revenues in this sector this fall (Roman, 2004).
