and expansion issues, as well as global supply chain management, whereas the spread of knowledge and ideas may be under appreciated. When
looking at the way business has developed and evolved there are many influences, technology, social values and the way that marketplaces are adapting in line with fashions and trends are
all seen. International influences can also be observed, such as with the goods that are imported, but at organizational level the influences may be less transparent. International influences may be
seen as also impacting on workplace practices and organizational structures. Looking at the UK this may become very apparent by examining the way changes have taken place and the types
of models and attitudes that manifest. The commercial environment in the UK has been one that is traditionally formal. Clear delineation between
management and employees has existed with models that go back to the industrial revolution. The bureaucratic model has a traditional structure, there is a strict hierarchal power structure and power
is delegated from the top of the hierarchy downwards with different levels of authority and an important role for policies and rules. In complex organizations the power may need to
be spread over the organization, however, even where this occurs there is still the hierarchal structure and decisions are directed by company policy (Baron, 1987).
