changed dramatically in recent decades and the ramifications of globalization continue to be evident in a plethora of "flows" that are indicative of the interrelationships between geographical entities. More
specifically, cities are more commonly unified as are states, governments and even countries. These flows thereby connect us to one another thereby resulting in a number of significant transformations,
including geographical. It was the sociologist Manuel Castells who asserted that flows of different types are what society is constructed upon
(Pisani, 2004). He said: Our society is constructed around flows of capital, flows of technology, flows of organizational interaction, flows of
images, sounds and symbols. Flows are not just one element of the social organization; they are the expression of processes dominating our economic, political and symbolic life (Pisani, 2004).
Castells further argued that it is a technological foundation upon which flows are perpetuated and even encouraged (Pisani, 2004). For instance, technology
such as computers, the Internet, and various other computer-related technology easily encourages flows because of the nearly instant transmission of information that is possible (Pisani, 2004). Flows of information
for example are far easier when technology allows for that information to be transmitted immediately as opposed to taking days or even weeks to reach another location. This is
just one minor example in how technology assists flows and their significance within society. Therefore, to Castells way of thinking, technology is a dominant social space, and asserts that
