structures evolving as the firms grow, along with strategies. For a company to realise a global strategy Yip argues that there are three initial steps. Firstly, to develop a core strategy suitable as a sustainable competitive advantage (Yip, 1989). It has been noted that this advantage is most likely to be develop in the home nation first and then extended outwards. The second stage is the internationalising of that strategy, and the third stage is the globalising of internal strategies, with the strategy being integrated across the different countries (Yip, 1989). It is the last of these that many companies appear to have the greatest difficultly achieving. The Uppsala Model also states there is a logical process to international expansion, this starts with exporting first direct exporting and secondly with the help of independent agents, then there may be the development of subsidiaries and then the establishment of facilities for production in the country (Johanson and Vahlne, 1993). The different stages may be seen as supporting different structures, and although there may choices that may be used some may be more suited to specific stages of the development and size as well as related to the type of buosness that is undertaken. Structure is defied by the dictionary as "a complex system considered from the point of view of the whole rather than of any single part" (dictionary.com, 2010). It is from this perspective we need to loo at organizations to assess structural issues.
