Increasingly, small start-up companies have recognized the benefits of relating business operations from a global perspective, even for companies that appear at the onset to have local market and local appeal. Background Calendar Islands Foods is a Maine company that began in 2009 as a cooperative of lobster fisherman seeking a way of getting a better price for their lobsters (Calendar Islands, 2010). Initially, the cooperative was created to bring together fisherman in selling their fish, in order to allow for a larger voice in bargaining with lobster retailers to ensure the best price. As the economy declined, the fisherman began to experience a significant decrease in wholesale price paid for their lobsters and many took a considerable hit from the declining regional sales. A group of fisherman, working with product developers and a marketing firm, decided to create a product line with global appeal that would allow them to turn their catch into a high-end food line that could be distributed internationally. Since 2009, the company has won awards for quality high-end frozen lobster products, and have gained public acclaim for increasing demand for lobsters in a region of the country hard hit by economic decline (Calendar Islands, 2010). The Problem Though local, regional and even national campaigns have led to an increase in sales for the company, the company has experienced some issues related to the ability to reach the global consumer: 1.
