Wilbur supposed he really was right-someone would be more than happy to claim for their own the creativity behind what some only regarded as a hare-brained idea. There were also those people taunting them with the statement that if we were meant to fly we would certainly have wings. The Wright Brothers were guarded about their work, if for no other reason than their neighbors already believed them to be a little odd. Just how would they react to knowing what the brothers really intended to do? It happens so often in history or even in current events. Those who are involved in trying to discover something sometimes have very similar ideas with only a small space of time between. When one makes it work, the other cries foul. Such was the case with the Wright Brothers and Glenn Curtiss. As the first people ever to fly a motorized aircraft, the Wright Brothers necessarily were the first to discover the need for a mechanism by which they could affect lateral control of the plane while in flight. Their now-famous Kitty Hawk flight seemed to be long in the past, but it had awakened the curiosity of dozens of would-be inventors. No one questioned that the Wright Brothers were the original designers of the first plane that was successfully flown, but dozens of these curious tinkerers were working to perfect and refine the structure first envisioned by the Wright Bothers. None other than Alexander Graham Bell was one of those working on refining the Wrights lateral control apparatus, through the oversight of the Aerial Experiment Association (AEA).
