Alberta, he was in fact born in Elk Point, due to the fact that his hometown did not have a hospital (Jenkinson). Nevertheless, Huser, born on February 1, 1943, grew
up in Ashmont, a small town of about "78 people and critters" (Jenkinson). Remembering his childhood, Huser comments that he always wanted to be someplace where he could find books,
which was "hit and miss" in such a small town (Jenkinson). When his family moved to Edmonton in 1959, Husers final year of high school, having access to the Edmonton
libraries was a revelation for him. But while Huser longed for city life as a child, his books draw from his small town childhood. While Husers first career was
as a teacher, he never ceased writing and, in the early 1970s, enrolled in a course taught by the renowned Canadian novelist W.O. Mitchell (Glen Huser). This was a life-changing
decision. It was from Mitchell that Huser learned to turn to his own experiences for meaningful material for his fiction. It was not long before Husers efforts at fiction were
winning competitions and his short stories were being published in Canadian literary magazines. Husers first novel, Grace Lake, was drawn from having attended church camps in the summer as
an adolescent. His first young adult novel, Touch of the Clown, was drawn from his knowledge of young people that he gleaned from his years of teaching (Glen Huser). Also,
