the fear that they pander is always based in some sort of fact. While the Y2K scare turned out to be an utter dud, stop for a moment and imagine
the recriminations that would have been leveled at the media if even a small portion of the predictions had come true and the media had not reported on this issue.
The populace would have reverberated in indignation with accusations of "why didnt you tell us?" While many fringe news agencies went off the deep end on Y2K, reliable news journalists
always hedged their predictions with qualifiers. It should be realized that this news story was based on fact. Computer programmers for decades had been saving memory space by
using only 2 digits to represent the date, as the first 2 were assumed to be 19. Correcting this meant sorting through millions of lines of code, so it was
somewhat logical to presume that it could cause problems when the first 2 digits switched at the beginning of the millennium. Similarly, the killer bee story is based on
fact. Orpilla is wrong that there is "no sign" of killer bees in this country. Theyre here. They just havent advanced as quickly as predicted. A 2004 story states that
killer bees were responsible for an attack in Tipton, Oklahoma. They are currently in six Southwestern states and they are dangerous, particularly to someone who has an allergic reaction to
bee stings, because they are much more aggressive than European honey bees. When the story first came out, entomologists predicted a spread of the insect of 200 to 300 miles
per year (Koener). This has proved to be wrong, but, again, journalists were basing their coverage on what the experts were saying about a threat to public safety. While it
