Walls, who is a journalist by trade, crafts clear, compelling prose to relate a dysfunctional childhood and how she, and three of her siblings, survived and overcame it, while also conveying the tremendous love that she had and continues to have for her family. The following examination of Walls memoir focuses on her father Rex and his problem with alcoholism. This examination will show that while it is clear that the authors parents were guilty of child neglect, there were factors that created a clear causal chain of behavioral events. This cause-and-effect starts with Rexs alcoholism and this does not excuse his aggressive and sometimes violent behavior, but it does make it understandable and this obviously helps the author come to terms with her past. Alcoholism and Violence Rex had what the authors mother referred to as a "little bit of a drinking situation" (Walls 23). The family handled well what her mother referred as "Dads beer phase," which involved driving fast and singing loudly, which was "little bit scary, but still a lot of fun" (Walls 23). However, if Rex came home with a bottle of the "hard stuff," Rose Mary became frantic because after drinking hard liquor, Rex "turned into an angry-eyed stranger who threw furniture and threatened to beat up" his wife or anyone else he felt had gotten in his way (Wall 23). Research has shown that between 40 and 50 percent of all reported incidents in which incidents of domestic violence occur, alcohol is involved (Wells and Thompson 55). This body of empirical data also indicates that alcohol inebriation is the "primary mechanism" that increases the risk of an assault taking place (Broach 17).
