so the best way to approach it is probably to perform what is called a "thought experiment"; in other words, think about the situations, actions and consequences involved in giving
a false report in the military. The idea is most easily approached by asking: when it is permissible or necessary to give a false report? There are times when people
choose not to tell the truth, but these are in circumstances where white lies" are more comforting than facing facts. The joke "Does this make me look fat?" comes to
mind: its often kinder to compliment someone on their appearance than to tell them that theyve made a poor choice and their clothes are not flattering. This kind of untruth
is minor and done to spare their feelings, and is considered harmless. But in the military, its difficult to think of any situation where the same holds true. Military personnel
pride themselves on their appearance, so telling a fib about the way someone looks in uniform could have serious repercussions: they could fail an inspection, for instance. But this is
relatively minor, compared to other problems that could arise from giving a false report. If we consider reports in the formal sense, as being written intelligence information critical to the
mission of a particular unit, then its clear the military files them all the time, on things from number of meals served to rounds fired to supplies ordered. In these
circumstances its impossible to think of any time when filing a false report would be a positive act. Its understandable why someone might do so, particularly if they were ordered
