From: Student researching this topic Past policy initiatives Immigration has been a controversial issue in national politics for some time. One of the most controversial policy initiatives taken to date has been the law that authorized the construction of nearly 700 miles of fencing to be constructed along the US-Mexican border ("Bush signs"). This step was designed to make US borders more secure, but many experts doubt that it will prove effective. A top promoter of the fence has been Representative Tom Tancredo (R-Colorado). Tancredo has been quite overt and brazen in the racist connotations that he brings to the debate over immigration, as he asserts that unless the flow of Spanish-speaking people into the US is halted, the country will become a "Tower of Babel" (Bailey 22). Tancredo takes aim "gleefully" at the Bush administration, which hoped that the debate would focus on Bushs "proposed guest-worker program, which would allow illegals--who fill millions of unskilled, low-wage jobs--to stay in the country" for a certain specified period of time (Bailey 22). This "guest worker program" is one of the provisions of the McCain-Kennedy bill that is currently being debated. Current status of political controversy concerning immigration Mr. Giuliani has taken the position that the immigration bill formulated and championed by Senator John McCain is a "hodgepodge" of initiatives that will not accomplish what should be the principal goal of immigration policy, that is, "tracking everyone who crosses the border" (AP).
