the fact that gender roles, and thus their influence on individual development of identity, have changed as well through time. In recent years in particular, female roles have in
many cases moved out of their confinement to family and home and into positions as presumed equals to men. This fact is reflected not only in our homes but
in the media and in the workplace as well. With societys changing perceptions about the "proper role of a female", females
moved into domains such as the sciences which previously were considered male territory. This move occurred with the most intensity in the years following the Civil Rights Movement.
Women began to make considerable headway in a number of fields which had previously been dominated by men, only one of which was the sciences. By the 1980s, however,
the entrance of women into the sciences began to taper off (National Coalition of Girls Schools, 1993). The gradual decline of
women entering the scientific disciplines as careers essentially went unnoticed until relatively recently. Almost overnight it seems there is a flurry of concern in the media, in the government
and in the educational systems of this country regarding the paucity of women in scientific fields. A quick Internet search or scan of online databases turns up hundreds
of articles on women in the sciences. Numerous professional organizations have published guidelines designed to entice girls into science and mathematics
