She says it is now her most anthologized story and that it relates what a young girls mother tells her about "how to be a woman" (Buckner 461). While brief, this short story captures the essence of what it means to be a woman raised in a Caribbean culture, as the mother conveys to its protagonist, an unnamed girl, the depth and breadth of what she will be required to know. While this information primarily covers domestic issues, it also conveys the depth of feeling that the mother has for her daughter, as well as a great deal of cultural information about gender relations in this culture. The number of topics and the information that these topics cover is vast. The mother begins with how to wash clothes, whites on Mondays, colored things on Tuesday. This abruptly shift to an instruction not to walk bareheaded in the hot sun. These frequent and abrupt changes in topic mirror the way in which parents talking and instruct their children, as they mention facts and instructions as they occur to them and usually not in any sort of logical order. There are also instructions on how to sew; how to iron; how to sweep a house or a yard; how to cook; what to plant and where, and so forth, comprehensively covering the major areas of a womans life. Thrown into this long rambling sentence as asides and instructions that indicate the depth of the mothers feeling for her daughter. She often thrown in the rather biting comment about how the daughter can avoid acting "like the slut you are so bent on becoming" (Kincaid 4). While this sounds rather harsh, within the context of the narrative, it comes across as banter rather than as a real prediction. ...
