common while remaining forever different in character and ultimate cause. In the epic poem Gilgamesh we have a man who is strong and half god, but also a man who is not liked by his people. In the tales of Homer we generally have a powerful hero that we truly like from the beginning, men such as Odysseus. The following paper examines, while comparing and contrasting, Gilgamesh with Homeric heroes, and Homeric tales. Gilgamesh and Homeric Heroes The tale of Gilgamesh is one that describes the life and development of primarily one man, Gilgamesh. He is "Supreme over other kings, lordly in appearance,/ he is the hero, born of Uruk, the goring wild bull" (Gilgamesh Tablet I). But, at the same time he is a monster to his people, an arrogant man in the beginning who takes any woman he wants. The people plead with the gods to save them from this man and ultimately they send Enkidu, intended to destroy him, who becomes Gilgameshs life partner, and saving grace. With Enkidu Gilgamesh becomes a more humane individual, traveling and developing a better character because of his love of his partner. He seeks immortality, loses his partner, and ultimately changes to a more likable human being by the end of the epic. This is different from the Homeric hero Odysseus for we generally like this man right from the beginning. The gods think very highly of him, as one indicates when saying, "How can I forget Ulysses than whom there is no more capable man on earth" (Homer [2] Book I). He is a noble man from the beginning. But, like Gilgamesh he must journey to find himself as well. Another Homeric hero is Achilles. He is not necessarily a truly likeable man in the beginning either: ...
