of ancient Sumaria, possibly, or presumably, the story of the King of Uruk. It is a story of the culture of the time, as well as a story of heroes and men and gods. The following paper examines the relationship between Gilgamesh, Enkidu and the gods in this ancient story. Gilgamesh, Enkidu and the Gods: "The Epic of Gilgamesh" Gilgamesh is the king, and also part god. He is a man who is not really well liked for he is selfish and arrogant, and an inadequate leader as well, as far as his people are concerned. In Book I of the epic one notes the following in these regards to the people and their perspectives: "s Gilgamesh the shepherd of Uruk-Haven, is he the shepherd. ... bold, eminent, knowing, and wise! Gilgamesh does not leave a girl to her mother(?) The daughter of the warrior, the bride of the young man, the gods kept hearing their complaints." In essence Gilgamesh, being part god, feels he has the right to everything, including any woman he desires. The people plead with the gods for some kind of help from his tyranny. The gods hear this plea and send Enkidu who has incredible strength. But, Enkidu goes against the rules established and has sex with a woman and thus loses some of his superior strength. He became more human but "his understanding had broadened" and in this perhaps he became better (Book I). Enkidu and Gilgamesh meet up and have a great fight. If things had gone according to the gods original plans Gilgamesh would have been defeated, or essentially put in his place. But, the battle ends with a tie and the two become incredibly powerful friends, fighting together for the same causes. In this they have gone ...
