There have been numerous translations of the epic and recently, in 2005, Stephen Mitchell added a verse translation to this long list (Jarman 329). However, whatever the translation, the whatever the meaning derived from the story, the principal focus of the tale is on the way in which the Mesopotamians perceived death, feared death, as well as what they valued in life (Jarman 329). Nevertheless, examination of several translations/ interpretations indicates that different perspectives that focus on different aspects of the text result in different interpretive meanings. I. Chad Garcias collaboration with Yusef Komunyakaa in writing a play adaptation of the Epic of Gilgamesh focuses on the lyrically poetic nature of the verse, which serves to convey Gilgameshs humanity to a modern audience. 1. The "I glimpsed a star" quotation from the tablets illustrates this point (Garcia 541). 2. The devastation of Gilgamesh at Enkidus death also reinforces his humanity, as the experience of grief tie him to the contemporary audience (Garcia 541). 3. Garcia and Komunyakaa see the epic in terms of how it addresses "loss and death" (Garcia 541). II. Reporting on Stephen Mitchells translation, Mark Jarman argues that Gilgamesh enlightens the modern reader as to what the ancient Mesopotamians valued in life. 1.
