in the novel Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, definitely has more than one patient who could benefit from counseling intervention. Gilbert is a 24-year-old grocery clerk, who feels bound by his
responsibilities to his family, which includes a mentally retarded brother, Arnie; two sisters, older sister Amy and younger sister Ellen; and a mother, Bonnie who suffers from severe depression. Gilbert
relates that Bonnie began overeating 17 years ago when his father committed suicide. As she never moves from in front of the television and her only activity is eating, she
is morbidly obese. The boundaries within the Grape family are closed, as the topic of his fathers suicide is not discussed. Furthermore, Gilbert relates that his mother refuses to
discuss the fact that her excessive eating is a form of suicide. He has tried to bring this subject up and express his fear that increasing weight will result in
her death, she responds by saying, "Hey! Im here! Alive! I didnt cop out like other people we know!" (Hedges, 1991, p. 12). This statement indicates Bonnies unresolved anger and
resentment against her husband, as she has interpreted his suicide as an intentional abandonment of their family and the problems inherent in having a child who is mentally handicapped and
has a prognosis that he probably would not live to be ten years old. Amy points out to Gilbert that the floor below their mothers chair now "curves down
