Culture can play a phenomenally important role in healthcare. According to the Giger and Davidhizar (2004) Transcultural
Model, individual assessment of patients should occur around six specific cultural criteria. These are a) space, b) time, c)environmental control, d) social organization, e) communication and f) biological variations
(Giger and Davidhizar, 2004). The intent of this paper is to provide that assessment for two different cultural representatives, Mexican Americans and Filipinos.
The point that Giger and Davidhizar (2004) continually emphasize is that culture is a complex phenomenon in itself and when that is coupled with immigration there are is
not just physical relocation to consider but also critical psychological transitions being made. This process affects the immigrants themselves but it also affects the country they are leaving and
the country they are migrating to. Le Espiritu (2003) contends that Filipino immigrants in San Diego, for example, are simultaneously "mobile and spatially bounded" (2). They live in
one place yet they can return home at will "through their imagination" (Le Espiritu, 2003, 2). To them "home is both an imagined and an actual geography" (Le Espiritu,
