even when one cannot afford one. The book depicts the story of Clarence Earl Gideon, a man with a long history of being on the long side of the
law. The book is not particularly interested in Gideons life before he submitted his now infamous petition to the Supreme Court, however, but instead concentrates on that period in
his life following the petition to the time he finally wins his case. Just as the case in the Bible story of Gideon, the trumpets are sounded and the
walls of resistance fall. They do so, however, after considerable effort on Gideons part. Clarence Earl Gideon was one man, a man without any resources other than those that
could be scavenged from the Florida prison where he was being held for felony theft. Never-the-less, he worked within the system to effect what we now consider one of
the most basic assurances of the US legal system, the assurance that we will be provided an attorney even if we cannot afford to pay that attorney. His case,
Gideon v. Wainwright became a cornerstone in American law. Giddeons trumpet first introduces Gideon through a carefully scripted hand-written letter received in the offices of the Supreme Court. He
was, however, just one more convicted criminal in a long list of criminals that was pleading for the Court to intervene. The fact that Gideons case was heard at
all at the Supreme Court level is pretty astonishing in itself. The fact that he won that case is even more astonishing. Gideon landed in jail in northwest Florida
after he attempted to represent himself at his trial for felony theft. The charges levied against him related to the burglary of a pool haul in Panama City Florida
