Though constipation is not inevitable among the elderly, several factors common to aging can combine to make it more prevalent in that age group (Sanders, 2007). Medication,
waning appetite and physical limitations all can contribute to care homes residents developing persistent constipation (Sanders, 2007). The purpose here is to interview a care home nurse for her
knowledge of the condition and then assess the interview using the Gibbs model of reflection. Interview questions are listed in the Appendix. The Gibbs Cycle
There are six points of the Gibbs Cycle. Beginning with description of the problem and progressing to an action plan, the goal of Gibbs Cycle analysis
is to reveal alternative views resulting from reflection of the facts of a situation as they are. The six points are description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan
(Reflection, n.d.). Description The event was an interview with a care home nurse who regularly deals with the issue of constipation among her
elderly patients. Feelings The issue of constipation is not one that comes to mind immediately when thinking of caring for elderly patients.
First seen as an occasional point of minor and temporary discomfort, there seemed to be other, more "important" issues to assess. Evaluation Something
about the experience that was very good is the change in perspective from the initial feelings above. What was bad about the experience was that it illuminated a lack
