that he was working on a theory that would integrate the parts into a whole, which he referred to as Unity. Other theories, such as Freuds broke the human system
into various parts and treated those parts rather than the whole being (Perls, n.d.). That was one intention of developing this new psychology, another was to shorten the process of
psychoanalysis (Perls, n.d.). He determined the therapist could end therapy as soon as integration had occurred (Perls, n.d.). The nature and structure of Gestalt theory places it under
the general umbrella of phenomenological-existential therapy. The process is based on dialog between the client and the therapist. Gestalt is similar to client-centered therapy and existential approaches in that it
deals with the here and now rather than on agonizing over the past. Further, Gestalt is about having the client take responsibility for their own feelings and actions rather than
blaming them on something or someone else. Because of this, Gestalt therapists can be very direct and even confrontational for the purpose of getting the client to say what they
really mean. The goal of this approach is self-awareness, awareness of others and awareness of the clients environment. It is about gaining the awareness that is needed to integrate ones
own feelings, behaviors and thoughts. The phenomenological method of gaining awareness is about "perceiving, feeling and acting" (Yontef, 1993). This leaves out any type of interpretation and explanations, which are
deemed to be not as reliable (Yontef, 1993). The process, or, what is happening, is more important than the content of the discussion (Yontef, 1993). It is important to understand
