death of Hamlets father, the king. Some may argue that she really knew nothing of the murder of her husband while others say she was not involved, but was at
least aware of it somehow. And, there is also the possibility that she was directly in knowledge of the murder and wished it so that she could marry Claudius. The
following paper examines how much Gertrude knew and to what extent she was involved. Gertrude One author notes that in the past Gertrude has often been portrayed as
a woman who was "heavy" and actively involved in the murder of her husband, although there was never any real evidence that she was involved (Rusche). This author, however, also
strongly argues that "It seems obvious to me, and I should have thought to everyone else (but one is never done with speculation in Hamlet), that Shakespeare meant her to
be an adulteress, shallow, handsome, but not in the least wicked in the sense of being a murderess. Mrs. Campbell said to me, The point about Gertrude in the closet
scene is not that she didnt know Claudius was a murderer, but that she doted on him so much that she wouldnt have minded if he had been" (Rusche). In
essence, this is seen as "feminine and shrewd" (Rusche). From this description we can begin to understand that Gertrude may well have had an idea of Claudius involvement but
that she was not actively or consciously involved in the murder. But, then again, we can also see that she was a woman who was aware but made a conscious
effort not to think about it. She perhaps liked the way things would work out with the king dead and her husband now being Claudius and thus had no real
