really nothing more than a figure without a great deal of personality in the play. At the same time the character of Ophelia is nothing more than a pawn in
a mans world, ultimately losing her life because of her simple nature. The following paper examines if these two women are nothing more than the product of a mans world,
that being the men in the play, rather than individual characters unto themselves. Gertrude and Ophelia The character of Gertrude is far more silent than is Ophelia and
her role seems almost without need except for the fact that she needs to be in the play due to the fact she marries her brother-in-law after her husband is
killed. This is a reality that really irritates and drives Hamlet into much of his action and as such the character of Gertrude is necessary. But, Gertrude seems to be
nothing more than a simple mother, not even a powerful queen, in that she essentially only supports the male dominated world in her language. For example, she tells Hamlet that
he should essentially be a good and noble prince, pay attention to the affairs of the state and "Do not for ever with thy vailed lids/ Seek for thy noble
father in the dust" (Shakespeare I i). She also tells him that he should not make his mother worry so. In short, her role is to be nothing more than
an obedient servant of the people and her husband and son. She is nothing more than a product of their need. In
relationship to how others seem to depict the queen it is primarily the same for they do not see her as holding any power save over the emotional needs of
