The United States of America prides itself on being a country dedicated to offering equal opportunities to all classes of people. Of course, reality indicates that social practice often falls short of such lofty ideals. This can be seen clearly by observing the malign treatment suffered by a number of disenfranchised or minority groups from the American cultural consciousness. Issues regarding racial intolerance are well-documented in this country, and religious and cultural intolerance has been a dominant theme of the 21st century thus far. While looking at this social issues, however, it becomes easy to ignore another area in which Americans tend to levy unfair treatment towards a particular undeserving subset of the population: the elderly. This paper will explore the discipline of social gerontology as a whole and address some approaches to providing better care for the elder going forward. This paragraph helps the student give an overview of social gerontology to set up the rest of the paper. To begin with, it is vital to have an understanding of the theoretical, psychological, and philosophical basis at the core of the discipline of social gerontology. To understand what gerontology is, one might think about the related discipline of geriatrics.
