transmitting bacteria? These questions linger and are for the most part answered. Experts recommend vigorous hand washing, particularly when in contact with people who are ill. In a humorous aside,
on an old Seinfeld episode, George went to the extreme and refused to shake hands with a man because he did not want to give him a cold. In fact,
George was right. When people are ill, and germs are around, it is better not to shake hands. First, what are bacteria and viruses? There are many different types of
bacteria. In fact, one could say that there are thousands of types and an individuals skin will contain about 100,000 bacteria ("Germ Warfare," 2005). Bacteria can cause illness and infection
("Germ Warfare," 2005). Viruses on the other hand may cause diseases like the flu or measles ("Germ Warfare," 2005). Interestingly, these germs are only able to survive on living hosts
("Germ Warfare," 2005). It has been reported that 76 million individuals living in America will have food poisoning and while 20% (Kagan, Aiello & Larson, 2002, p.247) of these illnesses
emanated from the home, 90% (Kagan, Aiello & Larson, 2002) of salmonella infections are related to the home environment. Evidence from Britain suggests that 6% (Kagan, Aiello & Larson, 2002)
of illnesses arising from food occur within the home and that poor hand washing is related to about 4% (Kagan, Aiello & Larson, 2002) of these cases. Cross contamination to
