rivalries in Europe, which ended with the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a serb and that was the beginning of World War I in 1914 ("World History"
PG; Mather 4). Some suggest that Berlin sought to exploit the opportunity to rise to world-power status after the assassination (Mather 4). Also, Austria was forced into a war
against Serbia, and therefore threw down the gauntlet to France and Russia (4). During World War I, Great Britain, France, Italy, and Russia all opposed Germany which was aligned with
Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire ("World History" PG). Eventually, in 1917, the United States would enter the conflict (PG). Their role essentially contributed to the victory of Great
Britain and France in 1918 (PG).Prior to the end of the first world war, the Russian monarchy collapsed, and the Bolsheviks came to power in what was known as
the Russian Revolution (PG). Each country had a particular motive for joining the world war. It seems as if some were compelled to participate. Others seemingly had no choice. Germany
