which they agree to disagree. Recent European elections, especially those in France and Germany, will prove to have surprising impacts on the future of the Union. The election of
Gerhard Schroeder in Germany and Lionel Jospin in France will have long-ranging repercussions not originally anticipated by those working most closely in the advancement and further development of the European
Union (most notably that of the Unions common currency, the euro). For example, Socialist Jospins government has been every bit as
prudent in its spending as any old-school Teutonic could hope. Meanwhile, Germany is seeing a touch of radicalism with Schroeders Social Democrats. Certainly, this is something of a switch
I terms of the attitudes of the individual nations if not the ultimate results. Of course, this is not to suggest, by any means, that Germany is somehow running
wild. Its markets are certainly freer than they used to be but they are still substantially over-regulated by standards followed in the United States. Factors such as these
