did not originate until 1871. The various Germanic peoples who were brought together to form this nation had long defined themselves as "German" and their founded this identity, as
did the people of Israel, within an ethnic context, that is, to be "German" meant be culturally and biologically descended from Germans. As this suggests, German culture has traditionally been
much more homogenous than American culture. For example, almost everyone in Germany is Christian, either Protestant or Catholic (CIA, 2008). The official language of Germany is German, and immigrant populations,
such as the Turks are expected to adapt to German culture. In contrast to Germany, from its early history, U.S. culture has been characterized by its heterogeneous nature. While
minorities today may see all European-descended Americans as a homogenous group, this was certainly not the case in previous eras, as visitors to America were amazed that English, French, German,
Spanish and Dutch immigrants and descendents of immigrants could live together peacefully and productively. While the unofficial language of the U.S. is English, this aspect of the culture does not
have official status and there is generally more tolerance for cultural difference in the U.S. as America is a nation of immigrants rather than sharing one common ethnic background. Nevertheless,
as Germany is experiencing more immigration, as well as the influences of democracy, it is slowly moving toward a civic perspective on nationalism, which perceives citizenship in terms of loyalty
