to the considerable effort of many. Prussian prime minister Otto von Bismarck, however, was as the forefront of this effort. It was there that he first used his
trademark phrase of "Blut und Eisen" (Blood and Iron) (Friedrich, 2000). Unfortunately, the wars of German unification occurred hand-in-hand with considerably bribery and deception. Although Germany was considerably
strengthened and her borders safeguarded, the lesser admirable aspects of the unification efforts would leave a deep scar between the country and France in particular.
To his credit, Bismarck had inherited a complexity of problems when he came into power. Prussia had restrained from being pulled into war as Napoleon took his
swath over Europe. When Napoleon seized western and southern Europe, the threat to Prussia intensified and Prussia was forced to enter the affair. Unfortunately, that decision ultimately translated
into Prussian losing a considerable portion of her western territories. The economic and social consequences were tremendous and, in an attempt to regain footing, the Prussian prime minister initiated
a series of reforms in 1806 that not only freed the serfs but that granted self government to several cities. Patriotism grew and many citizens signed up with the
Prussian army. Prussia also began the climb from the primarily agrarian lifestyle that characterized her before the French revolution towards industrialization. A Customs Union (Zollverein) was established between
Prussian and other states and tariffs on trade were minimized. Never-the-less, discontentment began to fester and, in 1848, revolution broke out. Bismarck had only been in the Prussian
