German companies, like others around the world, are struggling to carve out a business niche in which they can thrive. One
of those niches has been Bulgaria. Post-communist Bulgaria, while still struggling to some extent to purge itself of the negative impacts of communism, has a great potential in fact
to be an economic leader in the region (Howe, 2002). The country is particularly attractive for German companies in that it has a well-educated work force (man of which
speak German) which is willing to work cheap in comparison to that that can be found in the West (Howe, 2002; Ausw?rtiges Amt, 2003a). Bulgaria offers other advantages as
well in that it offers an escape from the pressures of globalization which are currently confronting many German businesses. Indeed, the thesis can be presented that:
German companies may avoid the disadvantages of globalization by moving operations to Bulgaria.
The Impacts of Globalization Given the above thesis, there are many considerations to
weigh in the argument that a move of German firms to Bulgaria is indeed positive in terms of German economy, that it would indeed allow German firms to escape the
disadvantages of globalization. The first task at hand, therefore, would be to explore those so-called disadvantages. The worlds move towards globalization is affecting practically every aspect of our
