of being touted as the worlds largest folk festival, Munichs Oktoberfest might be compared to Americas Mardi Gras with its focus upon eating, drinking and having a great time. The primary objective for all who attend this annual event is to consume massive amounts of beer, sing to a multitude of Bavarian bands and partake of the special endowments offered by the "buxom beer maidens [who] serve the precious brew by the liter in large steins" (Reichmann, 2002). Oktoberfest originated in 1810 when Bavarian King Max Joseph threw a magnificent wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig. With the combination of horse racing, wedding celebration and the time of year in which it fell, the tradition of an annual affair soon took shape to such an extent that "the Oktoberfest we know today evolved over time and incorporated a number of different traditions" (Reichmann, 2002). Food and celebration go hand-in-hand where German customs are concerned. often revolving around family, friends and feasting. This combination provides some of the most endearing memories for an ethnicity that is so close to its historical roots. Indeed, there is hardly an event that occurs where food is not part of the main affair. Eating for the Germans is more than a physiological requirement; rather, the very act of sharing food symbolizes many things, including faith, devotion, family values and love. In no other ethnicity besides, perhaps, the Jews and Italians will one find such connection with emotion and sustenance to food as one does with the Germans. There is always a reason to celebrate in an German household; in fact, daily meals are often turned into impromptu celebrations.
