given the current problems relating to the petroleum dependent lifestyle characterized by the U.S. and, indeed, much of the world. The declining domestic oil production in the U.S. coupled
with ever-increasing prices and supply problems for Middle Eastern Oil makes the identification of sustainable energy sources critical. Geothermal energy is one of the most feasible of these sustainable
energy sources. It is also one of the most environmentally friendly. Gothermal heat pumps, in particular, are hailed as:
"the most energy efficient, environmentally clean and cost-effective spare-conditioning system available" (Calahan, 2007).
By the start of the 1990s alternative energy forms such as biomass, solar, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric comprised only nine percent of U.S. energy consumption (Kozloff,
1994). Even today the situation is not much better. Geothermal energy, however, is not just an energy alternative that can be elected by governments and other organizational entities.
It is something that we as individuals can elect to utilize. In so doing we have the potential to dramatically change the footprint we leave on the world.
Geothermal energy is made possible because of the heat differential that exists between the earth and the atmosphere. Calahan (2007) reports:
"The earth maintains a constant temperature between 42-80? F in the United States generally in the 45-50?
F range in the northern latitudes)" While geothermal energy is a possibility almost everywhere, it
