The underlying and guiding goal for students is "to be reflective lifelong learners, to be responsible and active participants in civic life, and to live generously in service to others" (Self-Study Report, 2000). External Forces in the Environment The effectiveness of any organization is influenced by the external environment, forces outside that can directly affect the organizations success (Carson, 2003). Authors identify two types of external environment: the macro-environment, which some refer to as the mega-environment or the general environment and the micro-environment (NetMBA, 2004). The macro-environment incorporates forces that affect all organizations, regardless of industry, the micro-environment encompasses forces that affect only organizations or enterprises in a particular industry (NetMBA, 2004). Almost two decades ago, Tushman and Anderson identified five major elements in the mega-environment: Technological; Economic; Legal-Political; Social-Cultural and International (Carson, 2003).
