Impressionists, still had energy and fresh ideas to explore. One of them, Georges Seurat (1859 - 1891) is the topic of this discussion. Impressionism Hollander (1998), in reviewing, Meyer
Schiparos Impressionism: Reflections and Perceptions (1998), reminds us that art is never created in a vacuum. The known art center for the world at the time the Impressionists were
forming their thoughts and their canvasses, was Paris. It was a glittering and exciting world, and artists were actually seeing light as subject matter. They wanted to capture
the nuances it made on the water as well as the land at sunrise and twilight; it was not so much the sense of light and shadow any more, as
it was the sense of light as energy. In the art world, this time period has been labeled "post-impressionism. "This was also the time when science was beginning to make
major inroads into optics, so the artistic approach of Seurat was not that far fetched. People certainly knew about prisms and light refraction long before this. Light will
break into the color spectrum if it is refracted through a prism. Seurat explored the idea of re-connecting those separate colors, as well asking the viewer to unconsciously blend
them. Putting complementary colors next to each other also increased their blended intensity. Georges Seurat (1859 - 1891) I have always had a prejudice towards this
artist. I have admired his work, first through his drawings, which I feel become almost a language of form, rather than of line. I am impressed by the variables
of soft gray. Who knew there were that many shades? Yet the forms Seurat constructs are the visual equivalent of "fog on cat feet." The blacks are
