and their impact on the foreign relations of the early United States. Strange though it may seem, many of his recommendations and beliefs that are more than two hundred
years old have relevance to the foreign policies of the modern United States. However, his "Farewell Address" of 1796 remains relatively obscure.
Washingtons carefully crafted address included wisdom that earlier generations of Americans considered an indispensable part of their nations political thought. The address focuses on two themes, namely, domestic unity and
international independence. Washingtons views about Americas proper relationship with the rest of the world permeate the entire document both implicitly and explicitly as he outlines the proper political and moral
grounds that should govern the actions of an equitable people. In recent years there has been a major revival of interest in the
life and legacy of George Washington, noticeable in the number of biographies about Washington, popular essays relating to Washington, and his own political speeches. This resurgence of interest makes good
sense as America approaches the 21st century. It is important to remember that Washingtons political ideas were always combined with a strong temper, an overbearing stature, and a respect for
reputation supported by an emphasis on ethics. Certainly, questions have been raised in the past several decades as to what has become of that ethical conviction in American politics over
