birth and foundation of the nation through his participation in the Revolutionary War. The following paper examines the significance and importance of George Washington and his army as it relates
to the creation of a strong foundation for a nation. George Washington and His Army As can well be imagined, before the nation became a cohesive unit many
people were torn between siding with Britain or the new nation which was not really a nation. George Washington was an important figure in the growing nation because of his
time, and his successes in the French and Indian Wars. Because of his strength he was given the position of Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in 1773.1 Interestingly
enough, Washington was not a man who necessarily wanted to be President or be involved in war, but rather a man who really just wanted to be a farmer. But,
times and need urged him to this particular position and he humbly took it upon himself to do whatever he could for his nation. This is perhaps one of the
most important qualities possessed by Washington and thus a quality that would be reflected in the successes of his army. There are
numerous reasons that Washingtons army proved effective, and many actions and interactions that took place that cannot be summed up in such a short space. But, in terms of generalities
it is noted that "Washington knew that his armys success in the field was largely dependent on the support of the civilian government."2 Another author indicates how Washington was well
