winter silence of that cold Virginia midmorning was suddenly shattered by the shrill cry of a child. At the sound, Augustine let forth an audible sigh of relief, and
the tension that had framed his features for the past few hours fell away like a mask. He offered a silent prayer of gratitude to his Father in the
Heavens as he hurried down the foyer and into the room where his wife Mary had just delivered a son. Gazing down at the infant, Augustine once again gave thanks
to the Lord for this newest of blessings in a life that had already been blessed many times over. His own father, John, had risked a perilous journey by
sea twenty-five years earlier so that he, Augustine, would be afforded the opportunities that the colony of Virginia offered. As he held his newborn son for the first time
