415). When Orwell wrote 1984, it wasnt with the intention of predicting what life would be like in that year (Monarch Notes 1). Its probably more accurate to see the
novel as an exaggeration of what life might be like, if what Orwell saw as the logical outcome of the way society was moving at the time were to come
to pass. 1984 is a satire, the purpose of which is not to portray the future, but to warn the present. Orwells intent was most likely to ensure, with whatever
limited power he or anyone else had, that the kind of society which he envisioned in 1984 would never happen. One possible result was that it made
the evils of dictatorship seem more real and immediate. Writer James Pinkerton suggests that it promoted a common thought that, "This is not just something that could be happening off
in Moscow or Berlin ... this could happen here. And we dont want that to happen to us" (457). Orwells book arguably mobilized public opinion to fight the Cold War
for the next four decades, and in that sense, his book had an impact on the way we perceive our society. But other than that, now that we are
13 years past 1984, did any of Orwells other warnings for society come to pass? I think that in one way, we are very close to that Orwellian world. There
are no Thought Police, no one being sentenced to death for thoughtcrimes, but the technological advancements in the last few years bring us very close to the point where, especially
