Silas Marner, George Eliot tells the story of an eighteenth century reclusive weaver who loves gold and who adopts a little girl, Eppie, who is really the daughter of one
of the local landed gentry. In "A Simple Twist of Fate," Steve Martin tells the story of a reclusive furniture maker who loves gold and who adopts a little
girl, Mathilda, who is really the daughter of one of the local landed gentry. Of the two, the original still shines brighter as one of the enduring classics of all
time, but Martin does do a credible job of paying homage to the classic novel. The lives of both protagonists, Eliots and Martins, seem to be inordinately subject to
the whims of fate. Both start out with relatively happy lives. Marners home village was Lantern Yard and he worked as a weaver there also. Silas was subject to seizures
where he would be senseless and essentially unconscious for a length of time. (Eliot may have been describing narcolepsy) When one of these seizures strikes him in church, the congregation
says he has been specially blessed. Everyone held this opinion except the man who was presumably Marners best friend, William Dane. His "friend" starts associating Marners name and the seizures
with Satan. Eliot is quick to establish the basic goodness of Silas Marner through basic details. His face was "trusting and simple," unlike Dane who had "narrow eyes and
thin lips" and who was severely critical of his fellow church members. Likewise, the audience feels an instant affinity towards Martins character, Michael McCann. As always, Martins intelligence and good
humor are in the forefront. Michael McCann, like Silas Marner, started his life as everyman. McCann was a well-adjusted music teacher living in Washington, D.C. Very much in love with
