Proulxs "The Shipping News." They are stories that offer us a main character, a man, who is somewhat unhappy and misunderstood. The man in both stories, however, moves on to better things, perhaps stating that love and life and powerfully positive realities. The following paper examines these two stories, providing a comparison and contrast of the two. "Silas Marner" and "The Shipping News" Eliots story as well as Proulxs novel possesses, as mentioned, a man who is perhaps lost in life, misunderstood and lifeless in many ways. In Eliots novel we have Quoyle, a man whose wife is incredibly unfaithful. She dies and leaves him with two small daughters and he is encouraged, by his aunt, to move to the home of his ancestors, Newfoundland. In Proulxs novel we have Silas who is essentially a very kind and generous man in many ways, yet he is feared by his community and seen to be perhaps even evil. We can see that the two stories are quite different in terms of plot for each man is in a different position in his society, and each society is from a different time period as well. But, we also see that they are both men who are isolated in one way or another, and men who perhaps want something more out of life. With Quoyle we have a man who moves to Newfoundland and takes up residence, quickly belonging and even finding love. He is a man who is outgoing, kind, friendly, all of which are apparently qualities not possessed by his ancestors from the area. In Silas case we have a man who comes across a little child lost.
