A 5 page exploratory analysis regarding a statement made by Eliot that 'character is destiny.' Two of the stories in this trilogy: The Sad Fortunes of the Rev. Amos Barton and Janet's Repentance are reviewed for clues supporting or contradicting this statement. The writer suggests evidence that the statement must be one that is indeed qualified since one main character clearly has choices that can be made but the other seems to be limited by external forces.

philosophers and theologians since the beginning of time. Novelists have even become involved in an attempt to answer this question. George Eliot once said that character is destiny, which would
suggest she believed that the color and shape of ones combined personality and values dictated the end result for the individual and her stories, in their own way depict this
philosophy. The characters in some stories, like Janets Repentance, may get way-laid along the way but in the end their lives are in fact determined by their own internal workings
which are within their control and not the result of external forces over which they have no control. In other stories, the
characters are limited by their intelligence, their ability, their upbringing, and by other events outside of their control. Such is the case with Amos Barton. He has little class, he
is rough and does not posses much, if any charm, although, his wife is such a treasure, the reader must conclude that there are characteristics the reader is unaware of
for this woman to love him so much. Still, so much of his own character is a function of upbringing and other external events. One can only work with what
one has. Thus, it would seem, based on the two stories that Eliots assertion that character is destiny is not necessarily a universal for Eliot but rather a statement that
is qualified by the situation depicted in her writing. IN some cases, it is true; in other case, there are mitigating circumstance. Take
