with duel values. In George Bernard Shaws Mrs. Warrens Profession there was a brave and bold attempt to portray this duality with the central character being a women who is
forced to become a prostitute as a result of her economic circumstances. It may be argued that Shaws play was not the first
to deal with this type of subject matter; others had faced it, but not as directly. Nassaar (1998) argues that the play is a reworking of Oscar Wildes recent play;
Mrs. Windermeres Fan, but Shaw is taking a more direct look at many of the social issues, tackling the issues that Oscar Wildes play only hints at. This helps to
explain why the play was censored for 8 years by the Lord Chamberlain who refused to give it a license, the content was highly controversial and when the play was
put on many reviewers condemned the play as being immoral. The approach to the play and the meanings as are partly explained in
Shaws apology that accompanies the play where he brings attention to the terrible position that many women find themselves in, in extreme poverty and very dependant and aware of the
dangers associated with honest work such as the dangers of lung disease and premature death, that they see prostitution as their only option, with prostitution being the better choice out
of the alternative (Berst, 1973). Therefore, this may be argued as being a play that was highly critical of the realities
facing them during the last half of the 19th century, and is a play which can be considered from a sociological perspective as well as seen as purely a theatrical
