United States into an all-out war with Afghanistan have also served to make us more aware of a country and a people who, just a couple of months ago, were
barely distinguishable in the eyes of many. The problems which have become apparent in Afghanistan are, however, problems which have been in existence for quite some time. Many
of these problems are, in fact, geographic in nature. They are rooted in the division of one people and the need by others to gain militaristic geographic advantage.
Afghanistan is pitted into a constant relationship with a number of surrounding countries and political ideologies simply on the basis of her geographic location.
There are other countries, despite their geographic separation, which have been of extreme importance to Afghani history as well. Each of these interests has as some component, however,
at least some component of geographic advantage. A brief history is needed for the student to understand these interests. Following the Russian Revolution in 1917 the King of
Afghanistan saw an opportunity for his country to be independent and declared it as such in April, 1919 (Elmokadem, 2000). After becoming independent and being recognized by other nations
Afghanistan maintained favorable relations with neighboring countries including Russia (Elmokadem, 2000). Even during the trying times of World War II Afghanistan remained neutral and took no part
in the war efforts. After World War II other countries around the world began to build strong economies and improve the living standard for their people.
Russia had given aid to Afghanistan following their revolution and after World War Two. The United States government had no interest in Afghanistan
