Genograms in Family Therapy Written for The
Paper Store, Inc. United Kingdom, July 2001 To Use This Report Correctly, Family therapy is a relatively
new discipline with the development of different tools to cope with the multi-dimensional aspects that any family will be seen to present. When we look at family therapy, especially that
of Murray Bowen and intergenerational therapy we see that there is a strong theoretical as well as practical basis for the use of genograms. The basis on which they are
formulated is seen as the need for a framework from which the family, or a member of the family may be counselled and understood. The forming of a genogram with
a third person also represented the idea that Bowen believed tensions within a family would be helped by the presence of a third, but neutral individual who is able to
avoid the emotional involvement. In the formation of the genogram the will usually be work between the therapist and a single member of the family. In understanding a genogram
a useful exercise is that of the supervisee learning how to complete a genogram for their own family. This gives a practical demonstration on the level of detail needed
as well as the presentation of the genogram. As the supervisee learns this will aid the understanding of the theoretical ideas that this tool will illustrate at the same time
