Discussion Probably the most famous example of genocide in recent history is the Nazi extermination of the Jews during World War II. There have been many books written about
it; one of the earliest and most acclaimed is Elie Wiesels Night. Its not precisely non-fiction but its not exactly fiction, either; it seems best described as a fictionalized account
of real events. The horrors he suffered cost Wiesel his father, his sense of community and his faith in God. He soon learns that he has to look out for
himself: "Here there are no fathers, no brothers, no friends ...Everyone lives and dies for himself alone" (Wiesel 105). He wants to help his father but comes to realize that
the older mans infirmities are putting him in danger; he desperately wants to be rid of his father and the threat he poses; then he chastises himself for thinking such
a thing (Wiesel). Critics have noted that it is the hanging of a child that is the central image of the book, because that barbarous act destroys the narrators faith:
"Behind me, I heard the same man asking: Where is God now? And I heard a voice within me answer him: ... Here He is - He is hanging here
on this gallows (Wiesel 61). Wiesel apparently never regained his faith, or forgave anyone involved in the Holocaust. The definition of genocide that is most often used today is from
the United Nations; it is titled the "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide," and was adopted by "Resolution 260 (III) A of the United Nations
