as the specter of genocide haunted Wiesel, it continues to haunt the contemporary world as well. In defining genocide, scholarship points out that it is more complicated than simply
"collective acts of individual murder," as genocide is "organized" and "entails a project, which in turn requires leaders with a purpose in mind and their acquisition of the means of
death, including followers to do the dirty work" (Lindberg 9). The world has attempted to take steps against genocide. For example, in the late 1940s, while the world was
still reeling from the horror of the Holocaust, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed a resolution that declared genocide to be a crime against international law (Lindberg 9). The
Genocide Convention of 1948 calls for the "prevention and punishment" of genocide, and offers a definition that includes "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, national,
ethical, racial or religious" groups (Lindberg 9). Formulated by Dr. Gregory Stanton, who is a genocide scholar, as well as a cultural anthropologist and a lawyer specializing in international
law, the eight stages of genocide are: "classification, symbolization, dehumanization, organization, polarization, preparation, extermination and genocide" (Totten, Bartrop and Jacobs 128). These authors then refer their readers to Dr. Stantons
