said that a bond between mother and infant will be developed quickly when the mother provides consistent nurturing care, which he referred to as sensitive mothering (Pendry, 1998). At about the same time, Mary Ainsworth was conducting studies on attachment in Uganda. She found significant differences between children in Ganda and children in America, which confirmed her hypothesis that there are three separate categories of attachment (Reebye & Jamieson, 2006). They are secure, ambivalent, and avoidant. She pointed out that the avoidant infant or child showed the characteristics of infants or children who had been hospitalized and thus, suffered maternal deprivation. Ainsworth also found another important factor, which was that mothers interacted differently with infants in each of these categories. Mothers of avoidant children were not as emotionally involved with the child when he was an infant as were mothers of secure children had been during infancy (Reebye & Jamieson, 2006). Mothers of secure children were very emotionally involved with their infants, they were responsive to the childs needs and they were responsive to the infants cues (Reebye & Jamieson, 2006). Bowlby, however, identified the categories slightly differently. He identified secure, avoidant, anxious-ambivalent, and disorganized. The secure child will miss the caregiver if they go away but quickly reattaches when the caregiver returns. The avoidant child does not show any anxiety during a separation but will ignore or avoid that person when they return. The anxious-ambivalent child is one who will not explore a new environment, not even when the caregiver is there. The may have a fit of uncontrollable crying when the caregiver leaves and will demonstrate anger towards the caregiver when they return. This is a clingy child.
