following examination of the Genesis account offers an interpretation of what this passage is intended to encompass regarding humanity and its role on planet earth. The first chapter of
Genesis, the verse 27, which refers to men being created in the image of God, is preceded by a passage that refers to the creation of the all of the
other creatures of the world, which are all created "according to their kinds" (Genesis 1:24). Verse 26 states that God said, "Let us make man in our image, in
our likeness and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over the creatures that
move along the ground." The context of the passage suggests that humanity resembles God, that we are similar "in kind" in the manner that the creatures of the world
are similar. This supposition is supported by the parallel established by God placing the whole of the natural world under the dominion of humanity, just as humanity is
under the dominion of God. However, nothing in scripture -- or history for that matter -- suggests that human beings are similar physically to any aspect of the divine.
While God has been pictured in painting and statuary since antiquity as possessing a human form, there is nothing in reality to support this as a reality. The key
