Jacob are transmitted to the later nation of Israel (Metzger and Coogan 382). Examining Josephs story in Genesis reveals a great deal not only about Josephs character, but also
how his character develops due to his experiences in Egypt. These verses demonstrate how what Joseph experiences turns him from a rather arrogant boy into a compassionate and wise man.
While Gen. 30:22-24 tells of Josephs birth to Rachel, which occurred late in her life, his story does not start in earnest until Chapter 37 where it reads that
Joseph was a young man of seventeen, tending the blocks of his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, and that "he brought their father a bad
report about them" (Gen. 37:2). As this shows, sibling rivalry becomes a key issue in this narrative from the beginning. The next verse tells us that Joseph was his
fathers favorite son, and that, as a symbol of that love, he gave Joseph a "richly ornamented robe" (Gen. 37:3). These verses set up the situation quite nicely.
Joseph is the son of Jacobs favorite wife, the beloved Rachel. He receives presents that his brothers do not in token of his fathers favoritism; and, to add insult to
injury, Joseph is a tattletale who brings to his father a "bad report" on his brothers activities. Considering this, it is really not surprising that his brothers "hated
him and could not speak a kind word to him" (Gen. 37:4). However, the brothers soon receive more justification for their animosity toward Joseph. Joseph has a
